As you might have guested, I enjoy comedy (see Porcelain Reads). You may also know that John Mulaney has a new comedy special out on Netflix called Baby J. I’ve loved Mulaney’s comedy for a long time and it’s great to see him back on the stage.

For those of you that don’t know, Mulaney has had a rough few years, from divorce to addiction to rehab it’s not been great. In his Netflix special, he addresses his addiction, intervention, rehab, and aftermath in ways only he can poke fun at. But there’s a raw tension under the stories he shares, because, as Mulaney himself calls out, these are the stories he’s willing to share.
I wanted to highlight this special because I think he does with reality what I try to do in fiction. Yeah, life is funny but there is a real human there and that needs to be recognized under the pawned Rolex and fruit loops. I wish Mulaney all the best in his sobriety and, I can’t thank the community around him enough, for intervening in person and on Zoom. But really, ya’ll could have flown out 😛
