Briarpatch Book Review: Gideon The Ninth

*****Spoilers Ahead*****

In my best Gideon impersonation, this book is good shit!

This Lesbian Space Necromancers going to explore a haunted house ended up being a solid story! I really love the Harrow & Gideon dynamic. Their relationship feels natural and unforced as it grows from hate, to tolerance, to love and trust. I’m not normally drawn to LGBTQ+ but I think Tamsyn did a good job on it. Gideon is, perhaps a bit standard, wise ass protagonist here to provide levity to a ridiculously dark world. While I don’t think this book breaks the haunted house mold, it is executed very well! The necromantic aesthetic is really cool and you give a damn on the characters. When Gideon makes the ultimate sacrifice to allow Harrow to beat the BBEG it hurt. Beautifully and painfully done. I’ve some worldbuilding questions (Magic Rulesets, Technology level, National conflicts) beyond this but I’m okay without those questions answered in this novel. Looking forwards to reading the sequel!
